Unit 9
Students will continue learning the r-controlled sounds. 



All three have the same sound. These r-controlled sounds are not difficult to read but they will be difficult to spell.

This is how you mark up an r-controlled word:

Unit 10 
In this unit, a new syllable type will be introduced. The student will be learning the "D syllable". This syllable type is called d syllable because it contains a double vowel combination. Previously, the students have learned the sounds of the vowel teams. In this unit, we will only be working on 2 vowel teams: ai and ay. 


Now, we will focus on reading and spelling the vowel teams.

January Writing

2^nd Grade is continuing to work on our nonfiction writing pieces.  We have finished the research stage and have begun to draft our pieces.  Some of the new craft techniques that will be introduced this unit will be:  writing from the 1^st person perspective, speaking to the audience (voice), using comparisons, descriptive language, and bold words.  When the writing portion of the unit is complete, students will begin creating their habitat dioramas.  A notice of the supplies students will need for the project has been sent home.  Please make sure that you send your students with their supplies to complete the project in class as soon as possible.  Please do not do the diorama at home with your child since we will be completing them in class together.

Unit 7

Students will be learning the open syllable. The students will learn how to mark it up. The open syllable has only one vowel and it does not have a consonant after it. Here are some examples:

Open syllables can be combined with other syllables to make longer words:

Students will also be introduced to y as a vowel.

Y has 2 vowel sounds in an open syllable.

In a one-syllable word, y makes the long i sound such as: cry

In multi-syllable words, y makes the long e sound such as: baby 

Also, y can also be a suffix by coming at the end of a word. When y is a suffix, it has the sound of long e.

For example: safely, safety, lumpy

Unit 8

The students will be learning a new syllable type known as r-controlled syllable. When a vowel is next to the letter r, the r changes to sound of the vowel.

For example: bark

Sony Wonder Technology Lab

The Sony Wonder Technology Lab is an interactive technology museum.  Students will participate in many hands-on exhibits such as performing virtual surgery, creating an animated character, programming a robot, and more!  The Sony Wonder Technology Lab “aims to educate and cultivate the next generation of leaders in media, science, technology and the arts. By inviting visitors to experience the latest technologies in a hands-on setting, SWTL nurtures curiosity while awakening visitors to their own talent and potential.” (sonywondertechlab.com)

Information:

• Cost: Free! maximum of 5 parents per class.
• Time: We will leave the school at 9:30am and return by 1:30.
• Lunch: We will not return to school in time to eat lunch in the cafeteria.  Children will be provided with cheese sandwiches to eat in the classroom upon returning to school.  If your child does not like cheese sandwiches please be sure to send them to school with lunch.

January Read Aloud

During Read-Aloud students will learn about the lifestyle of Native Americans in New York before and after New York was "discovered" and colonized by the Dutch and the English.  Students will learn what life was like in that historical time period.   They will learn about the foods Native Americans ate, where they lived (homes), how they got around (transportation), what they did for fun, the types of jobs the men/women/children had, the clothing they wore, how they hunted/fished/gardened, how they made their tools, and much more.

December Field Trips

Thursday, December 17, 2015– Rockefeller Center

In second grade, the students study the five boroughs of New York City and important landmarks.  Therefore, on December 17^th we will be going to see the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center!  The tree is famous all around the world as an important symbol of the winter holidays.  Students will get to view the tree, hear information about the tree, watch the ice skaters and see famous stores in Rockefeller Center. 

Information:

·      Cost: Free! (All parents are welcome)

·      Time: We will leave the school at 9:30am and return by 1:30.

·      Dress Code: Please make sure your child is dressed warm as the trip is outdoors! They should wear many layers of clothing, as well as a hat, scarf, gloves and a jacket.  Additionally, they should wear shoes that are comfortable to walk around in and will keep their feet warm.

·      Lunch: We will not return to school in time to eat lunch in the cafeteria.  Children will be provided with cheese sandwiches to eat in the classroom upon returning to school.  If your child does not like cheese sandwiches please be sure to send them to school with lunch.

December Read Aloud

In the beginning of December we will be finishing up our read aloud unit on character change.

We will then start working on a Non-Fiction read aloud that connects with our reading and writing unit for the month of December. Each class will be reading different books depending on the animal they chose to study. (You can refer to the reading and writing unit)

The students will connect what they learned about researching in Endangered Species to this unit. They will understand that when we study something, we do not rely on one source. We collect a variety of mediums, and read them through to get a full understanding of our topic.

As we read, we might look at all of the facts and some questions we may ask ourselves are:
- Do I have a point of view or opinion about this topic?
- What specific facts support this point of view and are they reliable?
- Did I read them in more than one place?
- How will I write and illustrate my book to convey this point of view to my readers?
