In this unit, the students will be reviewing the suffixes: -s, -es, -ed, and -ing. The students will practice recognizing, writing, and marking up these suffixes in various words.
This is how you mark up a word with a suffix.
Underline the base word.
Circle the suffix.
The students will learn that the suffix -ed has 3 different sounds:
/ed/ as in rented /d/ as in banged /t/ as in fished
The students will learn the suffixes -er and -est and discuss the comparison endings.
Lastly, the students will learn new vowel team sounds:
Unit 5
In this unit, the students will be learning how to combine syllables to form multisyllabic words. The students will combine 2 closed syllables together to make one word such as:
bathtub
*When reading a multisyllabic word, a very important strategy for the students to use is to scoop each syllable with their finger.
The students will also be learning new suffix endings: -ful, -ment, -ness, -less, -able, -ish, and -en
* Remember that students must underline the baseboard and circle the suffix. Lastly, the students will be learning some more vowel team sounds.
