June Math Workshop

June Math Workshop

Time, Shapes, and Fractions as Equal Parts of Shapes

In this final unit, the children will expand upon their understanding of geometry. They will compose (make) and decompose (take apart/separate) shapes. They will also begin to develop an understanding of unit fractions (fractions with one in the numerator) as equal part of a whole. The students will also be relating fractional parts of a circle to the minutes on a clock.

New Key Vocabulary Words  For This Unit
Analog Clock/ Digital Clock
a.m./p.m.
Quarter Past/After, Quarter To/Of- related to time and the clock
A Whole- can be made up of 2 halves, 3 thirds or 4 fourths
Third of (shapes) thirds- three equal parts
Parallel- two lines on the same plane are parallel if they do not intersect (cross each other)
Parallelogram- quadrilateral  with both pairs of opposite sides parallel
Polygon- a closed figure with three or more straight sides (examples: triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon)
Quadrilateral- a four-sided polygon (example: square, rhombus, rectangle, trapezoid, parallelogram)
Angle- a figure formed by the corner of a polygon
Right Angle- a square corner

How You Can Help At Home
Practice telling time using an analog clock.
Practice telling time to the nearest 5 minutes.
Draw shapes with your child and have them practice dividing them into halves, thirds, and fourths. Focusing on the equal-sized pieces.
